"Empowering others to help themselves"

Visit Our Projects

Shalom Christian Academy implements other projects which are focused at supporting orphans and other vulnerable children. Many children have lost one or both parents and are not able to attain formal education. Disabled children are also neglected and left at home to do other household work like baby seating, digging etc...

their future with out education is not guaranteed and this leave a negative impact on the future of these children and the communities they leave in.

The orphans and disabled children are faced with the following effects:

  • They are neglected,
  • lose parental care and love,
  • they are expolited through child labor,
  • girls are married off at an early age,
  • they are forced to engage in child prostitution and other juvenile crimes,
  • they run away from their families and go to the streets etc...

In order to address some of these problems, Shalom Christian Academy implements projects such as;

Education support and sponsorship project.

The school supports children with scholastic materials like books, pens, pencils and mathematical sets.

Medical care and support to children and their guardians.

Medical care to orphans and vulnerable children in one of the key projects implemented. This was as a result of the high rate of disease infections in families. About 65% of the children would miss out school for over 1 month due to sickness. Therefore, in order to enable them access education we introduced the medical care project both to the children and their guardians especially in families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Home improvement through provision of basic items.

We support the most desperate children with home basic needs like: balnkets, mattresses, washing basins, clothing etc..., in order to improve on the living conditions in their home.

Some of the problems faced by orphans and other vulnerable children and the families they leave in.

This is Michael, he is a deaf and dumb child. He can not afford to go to school becuase his parents do not afford to raise tuition fees for him to be in school. He remains at home to look after the young siblings and to help out in other home duties. If supported Michael still has a chance of going to school. There are still so many disabled or orphaned children like Michael who are going through the same problems.

Early marraiges among orphaned and disabled girls.

Orphaned and disabled girls are highly neglected in their families, in that when it comes to education they are not equally considered as boys. They are given out early to marry and for the family to gain some income through dawary.

This is Mary, she was married off by her guardian at the age of 15 due to lack of tuition fees to continue with her education. Many girls like Mary are going through the same problems and they need support to continue with education. Mary's future is now distorted and she cannot get a good job because she has no skill or training at all.

Children and their guardians have very poor housing and living conditions.

Most families are headed by granny, parents, widows, and children. Their living conditions are so bad that even the houses they live in are almost collapsing on them. Not only the poor housing but even they do not have any beddings (blankets, mattress, bedsheets, clothing etc...). This has also contributed to the poor performance in school by some children living under such situations. They do not only need the education support, but also to improve on their living conditions in their families.

This is a widow headed family standing near the house they live in. The widow has AIDS and she can not afford to repair or build another house for her family. Her children can not afford to go to school due to lack of funds to pay for tuition. There are so many more families going through the same problems as this one.

This is a grandheaded family. This old grandmother looks after 4 orphaned children and they live in that house behind them. She says she can not afford to raise funds to pay tuition fees for these children to continue with their education since their parents died. The eldest child is 12 and he is the bread winner in this family. He tries out to do petty jobs around the village to get income to support the grandmother and his little siblings.
